Congratulations too, to our Tennis Team of Chloe Clyde, Lewis Devlin, Andrew Hall and Bonita Willcock, who took first place in the Strathaven Primary 4 Tennis Competition.  With their smashing ball skills, they have now qualified for the East Kilbride and Hamilton stage of the competition.  Good luck!

Rights Respecting Schools Committee Update

We are really excited to be having our RRS Silver Award assessment in a couple of weeks and have been busy getting organised.  We have been making good progress with our Action Plan.

We are holding our second collection for the Clyde, Avon & Nethan Foodbank this week.  We had a really successful collection at Christmas time after Sharon McPherson from the Foodbank came to talk to us.  We have decided to hold collections for a week, every two months, and will give everyone notice of the items most needed.  If you would still like to donate this week, they are looking for tinned vegetables and long-life milk and fruit juice.

Playground Charter Update (Article 31 UNCRC – the right to relax and play)

We worked with the classes and staff to review and update our Playground Charter.  We held an assembly to let everyone know about the new Charter and we have designed and made a fantastic display in our open area.

Safer Internet Day (Articles 17 and 36 UNCRC the right to information and the right to be protected from exploitation)

Safer Internet Day was in February this year but because it was a really busy time in school we are planning to have our Safer Internet Day in the last week before the Spring break.  We are busy preparing our activities for this.

Eco Schools Update from Daisy and Nathan

We have been doing lots of work to improve the school grounds recently.  The Eco Committee have made up a new rota to tackle litter and we have cleaned the climbing wall, which had become very slippery and mossy.  Our next job is to clear out the plant pots and beds before the holidays and we are looking for a more accessible spot for the compost bin to encourage people to us it more.

We are going to have Eco Monitor’s in each class to make sure we are not wasting the school’s resources and are doing our best to save energy.  We are running a competition to design an Eco Monitor badge, so that the Monitor in each class has a special badge to wear and everyone knows who they are.  Get your designs in for a chance to win!

We are really excited to be hosting a Big Breakfast in the new year, so watch out for more news on this.  breakfast

Rights Respecting Schools Update from Kate and Zoe

We have been really busy recently!

In the last couple of weeks we’ve taken part in Unicef’s OUTRIGHT 2017 campaign to help refugees.  We learned about child refugees (with a  bit of help from Paddington), and more about children’s rights, especially those that apply to children who are refugees.  We have written to our local MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, to tell her that we think more can be done to help child refugees.

We had a really successful Kilts for Kids day and planned loads of fun activities to raise money for Children 1st, who do lots to support Scottish children and their families who need help and also help speak out about children’s rights in Scotland.  We raised £178 to help them.

During November Mrs McPherson from the Clyde, Avon & Nethan Foodbank came to visit the school and tell us about the work they do in the local area.  This ties in with our focus on Article 24 of UNCRC this month, which says that all children have the right to nutritious food to keep them healthy.

To support the Foodbank, we will be holding a collection for the charity’s Christmas drive.  They hope to include some ‘Christmas treats’ in their food packages and we will have a collection box at our Christmas Shows.  We would be very grateful for any donations of non-perishable items such as selection boxes, small tins of biscuits, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies, crackers, small jars of coffee.

We are reviewing our Playground Charter to ensure that everyone in school can have the best chance to play safely in the playground.  We’ve been asking everyone what they think and will be launching the new Charter after Christmas.

Magic Potions, Vikings, and Children’s Rights

Halloween

This week we were very excited about Halloween! We did some Halloween science experiments using lots of different sweets.  We wondered what would happen to them if we put them in our magic potions.  Some sweeties dissolved and lost all their sugar and colouring.  The gummy sweeties puffed up and grew much larger.  We think they were absorbing water like sponges.  Our potions are still changing now and we’re checking them everyday.  (Andrew, Bonita, Chloe and Milly P3)

Viking Topic

We have finished our Viking topic now and learned the last ofviking-ship our Viking Saga songs.  Our favourite songs were Loki the Joker and Goblins-a-go-go.  We loved the Viking topic.  It was fun and we made lots of good stuff.  We loved going to Vikingar and making shields and the longship.  We thought the stories about Viking gods were a bit weird.  Everyone thinks Viking helmets had horns but they didn’t! (Amelia, Blair, Isla, Katie, Lewis, and Rebecca P2)

Children’s Rights

We learned about Children’s Rights this week.  Rights are to do with things we need and they can’t be taken away.  (Sam and Gordon P1)

We have the right to be safe.  We stay safe in school by following the rules.  (Katie and Lacey P1)

You have the right to be safe and you shouldn’t tell anyone your real name and address when you’re on the computer.  Only talk to people you know are your real friends.  You could be talking to someone you don’t know.  You shouldn’t ever talk to people you don’t know.  (Baxter, Leah, Ruaridh and Logan P1)
