Rights Respecting Schools Update from Kate and Zoe

We have been really busy recently!

In the last couple of weeks we’ve taken part in Unicef’s OUTRIGHT 2017 campaign to help refugees.  We learned about child refugees (with a  bit of help from Paddington), and more about children’s rights, especially those that apply to children who are refugees.  We have written to our local MP, Dr Lisa Cameron, to tell her that we think more can be done to help child refugees.

We had a really successful Kilts for Kids day and planned loads of fun activities to raise money for Children 1st, who do lots to support Scottish children and their families who need help and also help speak out about children’s rights in Scotland.  We raised £178 to help them.

During November Mrs McPherson from the Clyde, Avon & Nethan Foodbank came to visit the school and tell us about the work they do in the local area.  This ties in with our focus on Article 24 of UNCRC this month, which says that all children have the right to nutritious food to keep them healthy.

To support the Foodbank, we will be holding a collection for the charity’s Christmas drive.  They hope to include some ‘Christmas treats’ in their food packages and we will have a collection box at our Christmas Shows.  We would be very grateful for any donations of non-perishable items such as selection boxes, small tins of biscuits, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies, crackers, small jars of coffee.

We are reviewing our Playground Charter to ensure that everyone in school can have the best chance to play safely in the playground.  We’ve been asking everyone what they think and will be launching the new Charter after Christmas.
